Canada Examines Prospect for Diamond Bourse By Avi Krawitz Posted: 08/25/08 07:39 [Submit Comment] RAPAPORT... Canada’s diamond industry has launched an initiative to establish the country’s first diamond bourse. A working group consisting of members of the Canadian Jewellers Association and the Diamond Manufacturers Association of Canada has been established, which initiated a feasibility study to examine the viability of establishing a bourse in Canada at this time. The feasibility study includes four components: 1. Setting up a diamond industry database consisting of potential members of the bourse; 2. Establishing efficient communication channels such as a website, press releases, and other means of corresponding with the industry; 3. Conducting a feasibility study to examine the economic viability of the bourse; 4. Drafting an implementation plan outlining a recommended model to establish the bourse. A website has been set up www.boursestudy.ca providing information about the initiative, where members of the trade can participate in the feasibility study through an online survey before August 29. The working group is also hosting various ‘town hall’ meetings in Vancouver (August 26,) and in Montreal (August 27,) to engage in discussion with the industry over the project. They held their first town hall meeting on August 20 in Toronto. Canada is the world’s third largest producer of rough diamonds having produced $1.6 billion worth in 2007, according to Kimberley Process data. www.diamonds.net/News/NewsItem.aspx?ArticleID=22981
