WASHINGTON (AP) - Annette Nazareth, a member of the Securities and Exchange Commission, announced Tuesday that she is leaving the agency for the private sector. She is the second Democrat on the five-member panel to do so in a month.
Nazareth's term expired on June 5, but she could have remained for as many as 18 months beyond that. Nazareth has notified President Bush that she does not wish to be re-nominated, the SEC said.
There had been speculation for several months that Nazareth, who previously headed the SEC's market regulation division, would leave her commissioner post before year's end. Nazareth and Roel Campos had filled the two Democratic slots on the commission. Campos left last month; Bush has not yet nominated a successor.
The three other commission members, all Republicans, are SEC Chairman Christopher Cox, Paul Atkins and Kathleen Casey. Atkins has been under consideration by the White House to head another regulatory agency, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.
Nazareth has not set a date for her departure. Before coming to the SEC, she worked in the financial services industry, including at investment firms Smith Barney, a unit of Citigroup Inc. (NYSE:C) , and Lehman Brothers. (NYSE:LEH)
